How to use the bbhugme Nursing Pillow
Finding the best nursing pillow for your needs will help prevent aches and strains on your body, can help establish a good latch, and will also make feeding sessions more comfortable for you and your baby.
Whether you're feeding with breast or bottle, the bbhugme Nursing Pillow can help you through all the stages of your feeding journey.
How to assemble your bbhugme Nursing Pillow
1. Unpack the pillow from the storage bag. The Nursing Pillow consists of three parts: an inner pillow, a cover and two Pebbles.
2. Pull the cover over the inner pillow, leaving extra fabric at each end.
3. Secure each end with the Pebbles by threading the extra fabric through each Pebble and pushing them toward the center of the pillow.
4. Slide the Pebbles in or out to adjust the firmness of the pillow. For more firmness, tighten the Pebbles. If you want less volume and firmness, loosen the Pebbles.
5. Tie the pillow around your waist and adjust it to the height on your body that's most comfortable for you and your baby.
Adjusting your nursing pillow to you and your baby's needs
One feature that makes the bbhugme Nursing Pillow unique is its versatility. While most Nursing Pillows have a static “one size fits all” shape, ours offers adjustable firmness and a tie-around design. This allows you to adjust and adapt the pillow to your body and your baby’s needs.
Positions and ways to use a nursing pillow
Cradle hold
Cradle hold is an often-used breastfeeding position, especially for experienced moms or when breastfeeding on-the-go. In thiis position, the baby’s head rests on the crook of your arm on the same side you are breastfeeding from (left arm, left breast). While convenient, this position can often cause neck and back strain, as the mom is supporting the weight of the baby with one arm. A nursing pillow can provide great support, which relieves this strain.
Cross-Cradle hold
This an ideal position when learning how to breastfeed, as its very easy to see your baby and make sure they are positioned well and have a wide open mouth when latching. Using a nursing pillow, the baby should be positioned at the level of the breast so that mom can stay relaxed through her back and shoulders. Baby will be on her side, facing mom with her whole body. We use the opposite arm in cross-cradle, meaning that if you are feeding from the left breast, your right arm will provide support behind baby’s back.
Laid-back nursing
For many new moms, this is a comfortable position for both mom and baby. Lie down on your sofa or bed in a semi-reclined position, making sure you have good arm support. Place the nursing pillow alongside your body from your shoulder to your hip. Have baby lie on top of you, with both hands surrounding the breast like a hug. Once they are latched, wrap your arm around them for support (left arm if using left breast). The baby can rest their head on your arm and have a nice relaxed feed. This position is especially great for those recovering from birth and find sitting up uncomfortable. Babies also benefit from this position as it promotes a wide, comfortable latch.
Side-lying
This is a comfortable and convenient way for many moms to feed their babies through the day and night. Mom is positioned all the way on her side, using a pillow in between her ear and shoulder for head support. Baby is also on his side, facing mom. Pull baby’s bum into your stomach and keep them close. Gently guide them to the breast with your hand behind their back. Excellent position after birth, but very useful long term during nighttime feedings. Your bbhugme Nursing Pillow can provide support behind your back or between your knees.
Football/Rugby hold
This is an ideal hold for newborns, twins who tandem feed, or for moms recovering from a c-section that cannot tolerate any weight on their stomach. Using the nursing pillow around your waist, you will position baby on the side of your body with their head facing front and their feet pointing behind you. Using your arm that's on the same side as where the baby is lying, wrap your hand gently behind baby’s neck to offer support when latching.
Bottle-feeding and bonding
The bbhugme will support your arms, neck, and back while bottle-feeding, and give your baby a comfortable place to rest while they're eating. It can also support you under your arms or elbows during pumping sessions. In addition, all caregivers can use it to provide more support and comfort while holding, cuddling, and bonding with baby.
Safety tips when using the bbhugme Nursing Pillow
How to clean your bbhugme Nursing Pillow
Inner Pillow: The inner pillow should never be washed in the washing machine. If needed, you can spot-clean it with a damp towel.
Outer Cover: The outer cover is machine washable (104°F/40°C). Hang to dry (do not tumble dry). Since feedings can be messy, you should also consider buying an extra cover to help with frequent washings.
Pebbles: The Pebbles can be washed in the dishwasher or hand washed with warm water.
Use the included travel bag for storing your pillow or transporting it when you’re feeding on-the-go.
